In a historic move, the Maldives Supreme Court has annulled results from the first round of voting in presidential elections held on 7 September, and called a fresh ballot for 20 October. The court order came in the wake of unreliability surrounding the poll and in response to the appeal of Qasim Ibrahim, who came in third in the first round of voting.  Ibrahim had asked the court last month to void the results citing electoral fraud.

The highest court of Maldives, whose economy relies on tourism and fisheries, annulled the 7 September result by a majority decision of 4-3. Earlier, the Court had postponed the second round of voting amid allegations of electoral fraud.

Local and international observers had described the first round of voting as free and fair.

Mohamed Nasheed, who was forced from office in an alleged coup last year, won 45% of the vote, falling short of the total 50% needed to avoid a run-off. Earlier, Nasheed came to power in 2008 in the country’s first free elections by defeating the longest serving president, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The Maldives held its first multiparty elections in 2008, following decades of autocratic rule.

Nasheed said he was stepping down to prevent “bloodshed”, but later said he had been forced to resign at gunpoint by police and army officers. He was replaced as head of state by his former vice president, Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, who ran in the elections but polled only 5% of the vote.

The Maldives Supreme Court had postponed the second round of the country’s presidential election, due to have taken place on 28 September 2013. The court said a new run-off date would be set once it has ruled on the case. Members of  Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party protested against the court’s decision, saying that  the court decision was “unconstitutional” and that they have appealed against the decision.the election should be held as scheduled. The postponement means a breach of the constitution, as there will be a gap of more than three weeks between the two rounds

As per the constitution Nasheed had needed more than 50% to avoid a run-off against his nearest rival, Abdulla Yameen, who won 25% of the vote. Yameen is the half-brother of the Maldives’ former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who led the country for 30 years.

Just hours before the court ruling on 07th October, masked men set fire to the studios of pro-opposition television station Raajje TV, which supports Nasheed.

Any run-off vote should be held before 4 November so that a new president can take office by the 11 November deadline, but under the special circumstances the deadline could also be extended by the court. After all, a genuinely elected government needs to be put in office.

The Maldives is a South Asian Islamic republic which lies off the Indian sub-continent. It is made up of a chain of nearly 1,200 islands, most of them uninhabited. None of the coral islands measures more than 1.8 metres (six feet) above sea level, making the country vulnerable to a rise in sea levels associated with global warming.

With its abundant sealife and sandy beaches, The Maldives is portrayed by travel companies as a tropical paradise. The economy revolves around tourism, and scores of islands have been developed for the top end of the tourist market. Aside from the island capital Male, outsiders are only permitted onto inhabited islands for brief visits, thereby limiting their negative impact on traditional Muslim communities. Most tourists are taken straight to their island hideaway by seaplane or speedboat, where they are free to drink alcohol and get luxurious spa treatments, insulated from the everyday Maldives, where alcohol is outlawed and skimpy beachwear frowned upon.

Many Maldivians live in poverty. However, the country has developed its infrastructure and industries, including the fisheries sector, and has boosted health care, education and literacy. The Maldives was hit by the December 2004 Asian tsunami. Homes and resorts were devastated by the waves, precipitating a major rebuilding program. There is a fear that as sea levels rise, island countries such as the Maldives, and some Pacific territories, will simply be swamped and disappear.

Enemies of Islam, having killed millions of Muslims are still at work, wanting to kill Syrians and Iranians. They deny chances for Iran and Syria, among other Muslim and non-Muslim nations like North Korea,  of  making or possessing  nukes. Tehran insists its nuclear program is peaceful and says it is enriching uranium to levels needed for medical isotopes and reactor fuel.

The UNSC and the international chemical weapons watchdog, both directly controlled by USA-UK terror twins, wanted to disarm Syria and Iran so that Israel is happy and its nukes are the sole WMD in the region threatening all Arab nations and also targeting USA and Europe- only to hit them  under extra ordinary circumstances.

Israel remains the only  nuclear power with  illegally obtained  nukes and it does not want any other nation in Mideast to acquire nuclear  facility to challenge Zionist  arrogance and crimes.

USA-Israel twins are using the chemical attacks in Syria to disarm Syria when they failed to dislodge the Assad regime  by  backing with terror goods  the misguided  opposition which plays into the enemy dirty hands.

Although USA-Israeli  role in the chemical attack in Syria cannot be ruled out, Russia has accused the Syrian opposition of being behind an Aug 21 chemical weapons attack that most countries blame on the regime.

USA and Russia, the largest sources of  WMD on earth, capable of destroying the world in hours time,  have not yet decided a time line to dismantle their nuclear weapons so that world and humanity could feel  safe. However  their leaders keep  meeting off and on only to stay at the same  point of disagreement and arms race. Nuclear Risk Reduction Centers  agreement was signed on the margins of the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Bali, Indonesia. The deal, initially signed in 1987, established Nuclear Risk Reduction Centers in the two countries’ capitals that were charged with sharing real time information about atomic weapons to verify compliance with various arms control agreements. But no such mechanism has been devised so far.

When the US diplomat Kerry met with Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of an economic summit on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, they, as usual  also signed an agreement to modernize a Cold War-era nuclear threat reduction program between Washington and Moscow.

American foreign secretary showered praises for Syrian President Bashar Assad and said he is pleased with the process of destroying Syria’s chemical weapons stocks but he, like his predecessors like Mrs Clinton and Rice, afraid of  touching upon the issue of dismantling the  WMD of Israel- a fascist state in Mideast which threatens  the world peace  and the very existence of Palestinians.

Tehran insists its nuclear program is peaceful and says it is enriching uranium to levels needed for medical isotopes and reactor fuel. But the enemies of Islam are opposed to it.

The top US diplomat, rather triclomat, Kerry met with his Russian counter part Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of an economic summit on the Indonesian resort island of Bali. Their meeting represented the first high-level talks between the two nations since they sealed a deal to secure and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons.and said the Assad regime deserves credit for its speedy compliance thus far with the UN Security Council resolution calling for the elimination of the weapons only in Syria. Kerry said he thinks that was a terrific example of global cooperation, of multilateral efforts to accomplish an accepted goal and they have moved with equal speed to get on the ground in Syrian and begin the operations.

However, Kerry stressed that Assad is not off the Pentagon hook yet and needs to continue to comply with U.N. demands. International disarmament inspectors began work on 06th October to destroy Syria’s estimated 1,000-ton stockpile of chemical weapons. They’re working against a Nov. 1 deadline set by the United Nations last month to destroy the Assad government’s capability to produce the weapons. Both Kerry and Lavrov said they continued to make progress on preparations for an international conference to help set up a transitional government for Syria. The UN has said it would like to host the meeting in Geneva in mid-November. The meeting has been repeatedly delayed but Kerry and Lavrov said they hoped the rough date would hold.

Russia , the major supplier of  arms to Syria and Iran, supports the Assad government  Lavrov said the Syrian government has agreed to participate in the conference and urged the U.S. and other supporters of the opposition to convince Assad’s foes to attend. The opposition is splintered and has been unable so far to produce a delegation that could go to Geneva.

Russian foreign minister aid that the responsibility of WMD removal is not only on the Syrian government, but also on the opposition and all the states in this sphere should of course not allow these weapons to fall into the hands of non-state actors. Lavrov said the Assad regime, a friend of Russia’s, was cooperating fully. He made the point that the Western- and Arab-backed opposition must also comply and must ensure that chemical weapons not fall into the hands of extremists.

Meanwhile, USA-Isaeli twins  also target Iran simultaneously. Kerry and Lavrov also discussed Iran and its nuclear program. Officials from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council — the U.S., China, the Russian Federation, France and the United Kingdom — and Germany will meet with representatives from Iran in Geneva on Oct. 15 to hold renewed talks on Iran’s nuclear program. Israel wants  the meeting  to produce some progress on resolving international concerns that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons.

One fails to understand the logic behind Moscow and Washington  refusing even to discus the  most dangerous nukes in Israel threatening not only the existence of besieged Palestinians but also  peace and tranquility of the Mideast region.

It is high time now international community  woke up to the crude reality  allowing the most dangerous fascist nation Israel to possess nukes.  First, UN, IAEA and the international chemical weapons watchdog should investigate the  route though which nukes reached Israel and why it  hid the truth about nukes it has.

There is every reason to disarm fascist Israel.

Why are they afraid of Israel?

What exactly is Rahul Gandhi up to now?

It may not be easy to predict the future level of Indians corruption, following the Rahul Gandhi’s veto application to force the Manmohan’s UPA government to scrap the criminal ordinance that would have allowed the criminal politicians to continue to contest  elections and hold office..

Indian president, Pranab Mukherji himself a Congress party stalwart, also sought a clarification on the government ordinance that he would have to sign into law. Several senior ministers of the government including finance, home and defense ministers had defended the ordinance. The ordinance passed by the cabinet Sept 24 was with the president, who left on a week-long trip to Turkey and Belgium..

Will corruption would be wiped out entirely in India in days sot come?

Corruption rules the roost in India at all levels in India because the state supports and promotes while judiciary simply tolerates the nonsense called corruption for unknown reasons.

Corruption in India, therefore, is not a sin- it is boon. So, about 30 percent of lawmakers across federal and state assemblies have criminal charges against them.  People continue to trust them.

A controversial ordinance to save convicted lawmakers from disqualification appeared set to be passed by the parliament. The ordinance was passed by the cabinet based on the decision of the all-party meeting and was sent to the president for his assent. The government on 02 October decided to withdraw a controversial ordinance that shielded convicted parliamentarians.

The 43-year-old Congress vice-president’s veto worked and silenced one and all. Gandhi, a scion of the Gandhi-Nehru dynasty and contender for prime minister if the Congress party-led alliance wins a third straight term, made a dramatic appearance at a news conference at Press Club last week to lambast the ordinance and suggested it to be “torn up and thrown out”.

The ordinance was described by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as “nonsense.” Rahul Gandhi  rubbished the ordinance, saying that it was “complete nonsense” and should be “torn up and thrown away”. The remark created a political storm, with the BJP demanding that the prime minister should step down. The reversal of policy was cleared at a Cabinet meeting subsequently chaired by the Prime Minister, who met Rahul before meeting.  All Cabinet ministers at the meeting unanimously supported the withdrawal of the ordinance.

Obviously, pressured by coalition parties with corrupt leaders, the UPA regime led by Manmohan Singh issued an executive order last week that could allow convicted lawmakers to continue to hold office and stand in elections, prompting intense criticism from the main opposition party and activists.

Following a Supreme Court order in July, many lawmakers, including Congress party allies, faced the prospect of losing their seats. The ruling alliance had already moved a parliamentary bill to partially reverse the decision of the court that any lawmaker found guilty of a crime could no longer hold or run for elected office.

Before July’s Supreme Court order, convicted lawmakers took advantage of a loophole by filing appeals within three months of a guilty verdict to stay in office. The row comes at a time when Congress party appears to be ceding ground to the Narendra Modi-led right wing opposition Bharatiya Janta Party, who is using corruption scandals and economic mismanagement by Singh’s government to garner public support for his own prime ministerial bid.

Hectic parleys over the ordinance started with Rahul Gandhi, who trashed the ordinance, meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh early in the day. Hours later, the Congress core group, including party chief Sonia Gandhi, the prime minister and other senior leaders, who had earlier cleared the ordinance, discussed its likely withdrawal. Shortly thereafter, the prime minister met President Pranab Mukherjee and briefed him on the deliberations at the core group.

Sensing that the Congress would score politically for withdrawing the ordinance, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the prime minister should step down. The prime minister should resign,” said BJP’s Venkaiah Naidu. Manmohan Singh said he would not quit over the perceived undermining of his authority and that of his cabinet by Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress accused the BJP of doublespeak, saying the opposition party had during the all-party meeting supported the ordinance but changed stand after Rahul Gandhi raised the issue. Parliamentary Affairs Minister, flashing a copy of the minutes of the meeting, said was unfortunate that ever since Rahul Gandhi raised the matter, the BJP has taken a different stand. This is the old style of BJP’s functioning to say one thing in the public and another in private. Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Rajya Sabha member and senior SP leader Naresh Agarwal said if the ordinance is withdrawn, it will prove that the Gandhi scion is bigger than the government of India. Samajwadi Party (SP), which supports the UPA from outside, opposed withdrawal of the ordinance.

And the said ordinance stands withdrawn.

Critics rightly said the order was aimed at shielding allies that Congress party may need to form a ruling coalition after elections due by next May. By pushing that change through in an executive order, opposition parties said it appeared to be trying to bypass parliament to save the political skin of its allies.

Rajiv Gandhi’s Veto

Congress leader and the premier in waiting, Rahul Gandhi has shown that he is the man in charge of the party and government. He had the guts to slam the government measure as “complete nonsense”. His defiance of the government decision was seen as an attempt to distance himself from an administration that has been dogged for years by corruption scandals, which have stalled legislation and hindered efforts to revive Asia’s third-largest economy.

His outburst has also brought out into open the differences within his party between young leaders and the old guard. Consequently, India’s Congress-led UPA government withdrew a decree which would have allowed convicted politicians to run for elections while appeals were pending, demonstrating the authority of party leader Rahul Gandhi.

However, several commentators reckon the open snub by Gandhi has undermined the octogenarian Singh’s authority, making it difficult for him to continue as prime minister. Singh, however, has ruled out his resignation. But Manmohan reacted to critics rather coolly.  He is only the officiating premier until Rahul assumes power, maybe after the next poll. .

Corruption has promoted many in India in all walks of life. This epidemic needs to be stamped out –earlier the better so that needy people get the essentials of life.
